Visakhapatnam: Ten people are deceased, and one person is severely injured after a massive crane fell down in Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) complex in Visakhapatnam on August 1st while they were performing load-testing trials to understand its capabilities.
Four of the deceased men were identified as shipyard employees and the rest of them were contract staff. They were recognized as Satya Raju working in an Electrical section of HSL, Prasad Raman who was the supervisor, Jagan working in the maintenance department, Naga Devudu a technician, P Bhaskar who worked in an engineering company, Venkata Rao who was a technician, Siva as well as Chaitanya who were employees at Green Field company and TV Ratnam who was the crane operator. Officials are yet to identify the name of one victim.
As per the introductory information, the incident took place at noon, an eight-second long video shows the massive yellow crane crashing down in the shipyard. Later, the ambulance and police vehicle could be seen rushing at the site. However, the chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has commanded the district collector of Visakhapatnam to take the necessary and immediate action.
The collector, who investigated the mishap site, said that the pier crane was initially erected by Anupam Cranes of Mumbai two years ago, but had not been commissioned for regular operations as the company back-pedaled.
Officials said that HSL has started an inquiry while the government has ordered a collateral investigation into the incident to ascertain if there was any irresponsibility on part of the officials.
