8 died as fire breaks out at COVID Hospital in Ahmedabad


A massive fire attack took place at Shrey hospital in Gujrat, Ahmedabad on Thursday at 3:30 am. The patients who died were admitted to the ICU ward of the hospital where the fire broke out. At least 8 COVID patients, five men, and three women died in the incident.

The fire exploded on the fourth floor of the hospital located at the Navrangpura area. Several fire tenders were rushed to the spot to drench the flames. The fire was finally brought under control at 4:22 am, officials said.

Around 41 other COVID patients have been shifted to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, a civic hospital in the city. As per the official, there were 50 COVID patients were admitted to Shrey hospital, from which 10 were in the ICU unit. Sources have said that the blaze broke out due to a short circuit. The bodies of the eight patients have been taken for postmortem.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has ordered an inquiry into the fire incident, a statement from the CM office said. Senior IAS officers Sangeeta Singh and Mukesh Puri have been appointed to carry out the inquiry to find out the reasons behind the fire. The Chief Minister has ordered a report within three days.

“Hospital’s trustee Bharat Mahant and a ward boy have been detained by Navrangpura police”, said LB Zala, Assistant Commissioner of Police. The Chief Minister also declared a compensation of Rs. 4 Lakh to the kin of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 to the injured patients, an official statement from CMO said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Saddened by the tragic hospital fire in Ahmedabad. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon.”

“Ex-gratia of Rs.2 Lakh each from PMNRF would be given to the next kin of those who have lost their lives due to the hospital fire in Ahmedabad. Rs. 50,000 each would be given to those injured due to the hospital fire,” a tweet by the Prime Minister’s Office read.

The number of coronavirus cases in Ahmedabad district flowed to 27,283 with 161 new patients on Wednesday. The COVID-19 death toll in the district has risen to 1,617.
