India’s men hockey team striker Mandeep Singh, who tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday, has been admitted to hospital. Despite an increasing number of players getting infected and the near-certain postponement of their only schedule international tournament this year, the training camp of the men’s hockey team is on track at the Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) National Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
The upcoming training camp for India’s male hockey players in Bengaluru looks uncertain after half of a dozen of them tested positive for COVID-19. However, women can continue the practice after all of them tested negative for the virus.
Five other players- caption Manpreet Singh, Goalkeeper Krishan Pathak, defender Varun Kumar, and Surender Kumar, and Midfielder Jaskaran Singh too are tested positive. SAI source told PTI, “The men’s camp is in doubt after six positive results, more reports are still awaited from the state government. But the women’s camp is still on course after all the players tested negative. They are currently under a 14-day quarantine period and the light intensity camp will begin once it’s over.
The SAI official statement said, “During night monitoring of vitals on August 10 it was found that Mandeep Singh’s blood oxygen level was dropping below normal which indicated that he is moving from mild to moderate severity of COVID.”
According to the SAI, the players contracted the disease while traveling to Bengaluru from different locations. Their vitals are been checked four times a day. Currently, 33 male and 24 female players are in Bengaluru for the camp.
The national team players were given a month-long break from training, which is scheduled to start later this month after the 14 days quarantine period. It is learned that all the players and coaching staff, who have returned to the center last week after spending the month at their homes, will have to take another COVID test after their quarantine is over.
